ABC's of Kindergarten

Attendance: We love having you here each day! If your child is absent, please send in a written note explaining the reason for the absence. WCPSS guidelines determine which absences are excused or unexcused.

Brain Break: We will have a rest "brain break" time each day for approximately 20-30 minutes during the first quarter only. This time is a rest break, as students need some downtime without extra stimulation especially at the beginning of the year as they transition to kindergarten. Please send in a towel with your child. We will send home towels each Friday so they can be washed and returned on Monday.

Cafeteria: Each child has an individual lunch number which is also their Student ID number. You may deposit money online through your individual account at You may view school lunch menus by going to

Discipline: In our classroom, we utilize positive reinforcement and redirection in order to help our students learn to make good choices. We also use Conscious Discipline techniques and a Brain Based Smart Start to create a loving classroom community. We want all of our students to know that they are loved and that we are a team.

Expectations: We have high expectations of all students. We believe that all students can learn and do great things!

Folders: Please send your child’s Daily Folder back to school each day. Make sure to check the folder daily for important forms and information. Please initial the Homework Calendar each day. Friday Folders will also be sent home each week and will contain all work.

Frogs: We are the Friendly Frogs! When looking for our classroom, just look for our Friendly Frog flag which is posted outside the door.

GOLD: We are going for the GOLD in the Friendly Frog Classroom!

Growth Mindset - My effort and attitude determine everything.

Own It - Friendly Frogs own their own learning.

   Leadership - Other people matter.

Develop Relationships - We are a team.  Love your team.

Homework: Homework assignments will be given Monday-Thursday in the Daily Folder on a monthly calendar. Please complete the assignment each night and initial the calendar when it has been done. Mrs. Fagnani will be checking the homework and the folders each day.

Internet: You can refer to our school website at for announcements about upcoming activities. The Kindergarten website is Our class website is .

Jackets: Please remember to label your child’s jacket and send it on cold days.

Kindness: We focus on kindness in our classroom. Let’s all be kind to one another.

Literacy: Literacy acquisition is very important to me. Every day we will be naturally engaged in differentiated, open-ended, integrated activities to foster reading and writing skills. I use Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Phonics Groups, Writer's Workshop, Interactive Writing, Word Work, Interactive Read Alouds, Letterland, Heggerty Phonics, and Literacy Centers in our Friendly Frog classroom to foster literacy development.

Math: Math! Math! We love math! Your child will be engaged in various hands-on activities individually, in small groups, and in a whole group setting. We will learn to count, problem solve, prove our answers, and use Math Talk as we learn about using numbers meaningfully.

News: We will be using Class Dojo for most news and communication at FVES. Please make sure your family is signed up.  The Class Story on Dojo is our "news feed" where I will post important reminders, newsletters, and information. Please check Class Dojo each day.

Open Communication: Please feel free to contact me anytime with any questions you may have. Your communication is important to me, and I am here for you. You may send a written note in your child’s folder. Class Dojo messaging and email are other great ways to reach me--unless the matter is urgent and needs immediate attention. My email address is If our day is super busy, I may be unable to check Class Dojo or email until after school. For safety reasons, please do not email or Dojo transportation changes. Only a written/dated/signed note or a phone call to the office will be accepted.

PTA:  Please join our school's PTA!

Quarterly Assessments: Each student will be assessed in reading, writing and math throughout each quarter. Other assessments will also be completed to determine appropriate instruction for your child.

Report Cards: Report cards are sent home at the end of each quarter. Interim reports will be sent mid-quarter.

Snack: We have snack time each day. Please send a healthy snack for your child--along with a refillable water bottle.

Transportation: For safety reasons, your child’s transportation mode cannot be changed unless we receive a written note from you, or you may call the office before 3:00. Dojo messages cannot be accepted because I may not check Dojo before the end of the day.  Please be consistent with your child’s transportation so that we can get them to the right place each day. Thank you for understanding.

Unique: Each child is unique and special. We look for each child’s strengths on which to build upon.

Volunteers: I love to have volunteers! All volunteers must complete a background check before working with the children in our classroom. (Even if you completed one last year, you must complete another one for this school year.) The volunteer sign up is done from a school computer. I love having volunteers for centers, parties, and field trips--or volunteers to donate items.  Any help is greatly appreciated. We will begin utilizing volunteers after the students have adjusted to our schedule and classroom procedures. I will send information about how you can help.

We: We are a TEAM at Fuquay-Varina Elementary. Welcome! We are so glad that you are here!

“X”-tra clothes: Please send in an extra full set of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear, and socks) to keep at school in a labeled ziplock bag.

You: You are your child’s first and most important teacher. You are the expert regarding your child. You are my partner in your child’s education. I look forward to partnering with you this school year!

Zzzzzzzz's: Kids need lots of sleep. Expect them to be tired at the end of the day. They work hard in school, and it takes a while to acclimate. Please make sure your child has a regularly scheduled bedtime.

WOW—that was a lot!  Thank you for taking the time to read it all.  I look forward to a GREAT year with you! ☺
